Auction Haus
For private sellers

A houseful, a workshop, or one good piece.

Downsizing, clearing a house, emptying a garage, or thinning out a collection. Auction Haus photographs it, lists it, and handles the bidding, the payment, and the collection. You do not need a truck, a trade account, or a fixed idea of what any of it is worth.

Selling as a business instead? There is a page for retailers and one for auction houses and liquidators.

What we take

What private sellers send us

You do not have to sort it, clean it, or price it first. Show us what is there and we will say what is worth listing.

Furniture and household goods

The contents of a room, a basement, or a whole house.

Tools and shop equipment

Hand tools, power tools, and what is left in a garage or a workshop.

Kitchenware and small appliances

The cupboard contents that are worth more at auction than at the curb.

Collections

A collection being broken up or thinned out, whole or in parts.

Garden, outdoor, and farm

Mowers, machinery, outdoor furniture, and what is behind the shed.

One good piece

A single item you would rather not sell out of your own driveway.

Worth listing
Anything likely to sell for $10 or more gets its own listing. Smaller things go into box lots. We don't list used mattresses, particleboard furniture, car seats, cribs or clothing. Those are offered for donation instead.
Estates

Clearing a house, and what it costs

Clearing a house after a death is most of the private consigning an auction house does. Send photos or a room list and we will work out what goes to auction and what does not. There is no need to have it sorted before you get in touch.

A house holds two kinds of thing, and they behave differently once the auction is over.

Small items

Glassware, utensils, linen, clothing

The contents of cupboards, drawers, and wardrobes. Plenty of it sells. Clothing and anything else that doesn't is easy to move on, because a thrift shop or a charity will usually take it.

Small items are almost never what a clearing job costs you.

Large items

Couches, mattresses, flatpack furniture

Anything that takes two people to lift. These sell well when they are solid and in demand, and they are the pieces that cost money when they are not.

A three-seater nobody bid on is a truck and a landfill fee. Charities turn down a lot of furniture.

Donated first
Anything we cannot sell is offered for donation before anything else happens to it. Only what nobody will take goes for disposal.
The first $100
Auction Haus carries the first $100 of disposal on a clearing job. Anything past that is billed to you. A house with several large pieces that do not sell can run past $100, which is why the form below asks what large items are in it.
How it works

From your garage to a statement

  1. 01

    Show us what you have

Text photos, or fill in the form below. Photos of a full room are more use than a written list. We tell you what we would list and what we would not.

  2. 02

    It gets to us

Drop it off at 1035 Industrial Crescent, St. Clements, Ontario for free, or we'll pick it up anywhere in Waterloo Region for $100 a truckload. That's where your goods are photographed and stored while the auction runs, and where bidders collect them.

  3. 03

    We photograph and list it

Every item is photographed and written up with its condition, including any marks or missing parts. That written condition is what bidders are agreeing to.

  4. 04

    We handle the bidders

Bidding, questions, payment, and collection are all on our side. Nobody comes to your house, and you are not meeting strangers in a driveway to sell a dresser.

  5. 05

    You get a statement

A statement with a line for each item and what it sold for, so you can see what each piece made rather than one figure for the lot.

The arrangement

The terms for private sellers

Your share
You keep 82% of the hammer price. Our commission is 18%, with a $5 minimum on each lot that sells, and it's never more than the lot sold for.
Big items
A lot that sells for over $1,000 is charged 10% instead, on the whole price.
Up front
Nothing. Our share comes out of the sale, the same as it does for every other consignor.
Getting it here
Drop-off in St. Clements is free. We pick up anywhere in Waterloo Region for $100 a truckload, and it comes off your statement. Pickup is free if your items sell for $2,000 or more.
Anonymity
Listings do not carry your name. Bidders see the item and its condition, not who it belonged to.
Sales
Everything sells as-is and the sale is final. Every listing says so, and bidders agree to it before they bid.
Reserves
None by default. You can set one on a lot we expect to sell for over $500. If bidding doesn't reach it, the fee is 5% of the reserve.
Buyer's premium
13% on the hammer price, up to $1,000 per lot. The buyer pays it on top of the hammer price. It does not come out of your share.
What does not sell
It runs once more for free. After that, you can collect it within 7 days, or it's offered for donation. Only what nobody will take goes for disposal. We cover the first $100 of that on a clearing job, and anything past it is billed to you.
Statements
A line for each item and what it sold for.
Paid
By e-transfer, within 7 days of the auction closing.
Answers

What private sellers ask first

Do I have to be there?

No. Bidding, payment, and collection all happen at our building. Nobody comes to your house and you are not arranging meet-ups with buyers.

What if I do not know what it is worth?

That is what an auction is for. We write up what it is and what condition it is in, and the bidding settles the rest.

Can I sell just one thing?

Yes, if it'll sell for $10 or more. Tell us what it is and we'll say what it's likely to bring.

Could I be left with a disposal bill?

Only past the first $100, which we carry. We tell you before anything moves if a job looks likely to run past it.

What happens to what does not sell?

It is offered for donation first. Disposal is the last resort rather than the first one.

Do you take the whole house?

Send photos or a room list and we will tell you what we would run, what is better donated, and what is not worth moving.

Get started

Tell us what you have

Send this over and we will get in touch. Four questions are needed. The rest help us work out what is involved, and you can skip any of them.

About you

We text more than we call, and you can text photos to the same number.

About what you are selling

Large pieces are what disposal costs run on, so this is what tells us early whether a job is likely to go past the first $100.

We use this to get in touch about what you are selling. Your name does not go on any listing.

Thanks, we have got it

We will be in touch about what you have. If you would rather talk sooner, or want to send photos, text 519-807-6720.

Another way

Or just text us photos

Ask for Pat. A few photos of a room are enough to say whether it is worth listing and what it is likely to do.
